Extreme Weather Preparedness

Bluewater Marina is a cyclone-rated marina designed to provide a safe and secure environment for vessels in Tropical North Queensland. While every effort is made to minimise risk during severe weather events, vessel owners are responsible for ensuring their vessels are adequately prepared and secured.

This page provides general guidance to help berth holders prepare for extreme weather conditions, including cyclones, strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges.

Before the Cyclone Season

The North Queensland cyclone season typically runs from November through April.

We recommend that all vessel owners:

  • Review their vessel insurance coverage.
  • Ensure contact details are current and up to date.
  • Inspect mooring lines, fenders, and equipment regularly.
  • Prepare a cyclone response plan for their vessel.
  • Remove unnecessary items from decks and exposed areas.
  • Familiarise themselves with marina procedures and emergency contacts.

When a Weather Warning Is Issued

If a severe weather warning is issued, vessel owners should:

  • Monitor official weather updates.
  • Follow instructions issued by marina management.
  • Secure all loose equipment and deck items.
  • Check mooring lines and fender placement.
  • Ensure vessel batteries are fully charged.
  • Confirm emergency contact information is current.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel to the marina during dangerous conditions.
Vessel Owner Responsibilities

Each vessel owner is responsible for:

  • Maintaining their vessel in a seaworthy condition.
  • Ensuring mooring lines and fittings are suitable and secure.
  • Holding current vessel insurance.
  • Following marina rules and emergency procedures.
  • Responding promptly to requests from marina management during severe weather events.
Marina Responsibilities

Bluewater Marina is committed to maintaining a safe environment for berth holders and visitors.

The marina team will:

  • Monitor weather conditions and official warnings.
  • Communicate important updates when required.
  • Maintain marina infrastructure and facilities.
  • Provide information regarding preparedness procedures.

Please note that no marina can guarantee protection from all weather-related risks, and vessel owners should take appropriate precautions at all times.
